Shana’s childhood friend, Rebecca Bardach, works for the organization Yad b’Yad/Hand in Hand: Center for Arab-Jewish Educaiton in Israel. Over the years the center has established schools throughout Israel and engaged in important cross-cultural and interfaith dialogue. This week, as debates over the Nation-State Bill and the future of Israel’s democracy erupt and new elections are being called for, a Hand in Hand school in Jerusalem was torched. This school is emblematic of dynamic and profound efforts at peaceful coexistence and understanding between Arabs and Jews. Despite all the violence and heartbreak, coexistence is, and must remain an overarching value for all people throughout the region. Just as the Maccabees rededicated and restored the Temple, so too, we pray for the success of those who are dedicated to restoring this school and courageously continuing its goals for a peaceful state of Israel.
