A Prayer for Peace

The Damascus Gate in Jerusalem

God of All Mothers and Fathers, God of patience and persistence, God of resiliency and reconciliation:

At this time of high tensions in Your Holy City, Help all its residents to practice self-awareness, self-scrutiny, and self-control. Be with responsible leaders of all faiths who are working to restore the civility and respect required for people to work, worship, and simply walk the streets without hostility and aggression. Strengthen the resolve of those who reject revenge and retaliation. Support those who prize the dignity of others as highly as their own.

May Your Holy City, steeped in the history and heritage of many peoples, once again be a place that holds all humanity, and all creation to be sacred, precious and beautiful. Cause us to consider the price of continued conflict and the rewards of swift and sweeping change. May the weeping and wailing, the tears and trauma of violence and hatred come quickly to an end. May they speedily be replaced with the promise of Your prophet: “Once again, will there be heard in the cities of Israel and the streets of Jerusalem: the sounds of joy and happiness, the voice of the groom and the voice of the bride, the shouts of young people celebrating, the songs of children at play.” (Jeremiah 33:11)

May Jerusalem, All Israel, and All the World dedicate itself to the demanding work of a just, comprehensive, and enduring peace. Spread over us, O God, the promise of peace.
